Villa complex „Romeo” and „Juliet”
The romantic twins of Palanga Resort – „Romeo” (left) and „Juliet”. The villas were built between 1890 and 1905. At the beginning of the 20th century the villas belonged to Countess Sofia Tiškeviciene and were rented out. Unfortunately, the perimeter balconies typical of resort villas have not survived. During the high season in Palanga, they were transformed into a place for playful flirting, dating and socialising.
From the early 1940s, the villas were owned by the Bank of Lithuanian Economy. In 1937, a boarding house and a sanatorium were opened there, and later the premises were used as a holiday resort „Jūratės”. To this day, the villas look quite authentic, although the facades were extended and the balconies and terraces were demolished during the Soviet era.
The complex of Romeo and Juliet villas on Birutė Avenue, together with other buildings owned by the Counts, is a symbol of the elegant historical period of the Tiškevičius family and marks the beginning of modern holiday culture in Lithuania. In 1993, the building was included in the Register of Cultural Property of the Republic of Lithuania.
