Monument to the first Lithuanian play
Jūratė and Kastytis Square, Palanga (on the right side, walking towards the bridge on J. Basanavičiaus Street) Author: R. Midvikis
The first public Lithuanian play based on Keturakis’ play “Amerika pirtyje” (America in the Bathhouse) was performed in 1899 in Palanga, in the Tiškevičiai family’s warehouse near the bridge. A wooden stele was created in 1969 (sculptor V. Vildžiūnaitė) to commemorate this event, which has entered the cultural history of the entire country.
In 1989, on the 90th anniversary of the Palanga performance, a granite stele designed by Regimantas Midvikis was unveiled in Jūratė and Kastytis Square, commemorating the place where the first public performance in Lithuanian took place.
