Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Star of the Sea, and observation tower
The Catholic parish in Šventoji was established in 1939, and its administrator was appointed by President Antanas Smetona’s ship chaplain, Father A. Račkauskas. The temporary parish church was built at the expense of Prelate Dr. Jurgis Galdikas (one kilometer from the port, near the Šventoji River). The new church in Šventoji, designed by architects R. Krištapavičius and G. Aperavičius, began construction in 1991. It was consecrated in 2003 by Bishop J. Boruta. The church in Šventoji meets the religious needs of not only permanent residents but also vacationers who come during the summer season. Young people, family centers, and other Catholic organizations gather at the parish.
The church tower has an observation deck. To see Šventoji from a bird’s eye view, you first have to climb 200 steps and reach the top of the twelve-story building. There is currently no elevator in the church to make this challenge easier. And although you have to climb about 40 meters on foot, it is definitely worth it – the observation deck offers amazing panoramic views of Šventoji – the magnificent port, the enchanting sea, cozy, authentic houses, and on a sunny day, you can even see Palanga. “Looking down from above, you are once again amazed by the beauty of Šventoji. The whole town is like the palm of your hand, with the port of Šventoji and the sea in the distance. Of course, visibility is poorer on a cloudy day, but in sunny weather you can even see Palanga,” said Z. Degutis.
